Belgium has detained a sanctioned product tanker in the North Sea over suspected false flag operations and links to Iranian oil networks.

Naval forces intercepted the vessel while it transited Belgian waters. Authorities boarded the tanker with support from French military aircraft. Officials said the ship was sailing under a fraudulent flag and carried falsified registration documents.

After the boarding, authorities escorted the vessel to Zeebrugge. Prosecutors placed the tanker under judicial control and opened a criminal investigation.

Investigators are examining suspected document forgery and potential breaches of European sanctions. The vessel appears on EU sanctions lists tied to prohibited crude oil movements. Authorities are also reviewing ownership and management structures that may connect the ship to Iranian linked commercial networks.

Belgian defence forces coordinated the operation with maritime police and federal prosecutors. Boarding teams secured the crew and verified their identities. Officials collected documentation and digital records during the inspection.

The tanker remains in Zeebrugge pending further legal action.

European authorities have increased enforcement against vessels that manipulate flag registries or use opaque corporate structures to conceal sanctioned trades. False flag tactics and layered ownership models remain common in sanction evasion networks tied to Iranian and Russian crude exports.

Belgium’s action signals stricter enforcement in North Sea waters. It also highlights growing compliance risks for shipowners, charterers and insurers involved in high risk tanker trades connected to sanctioned oil supply chains.
