Russia Says U.S. Seizure of Oil Tanker Breaches Maritime Law
Russia has accused the United States of illegally seizing a Russian-flagged oil tanker on the high seas, calling the action a violation of international maritime law.
The US illegal tanker seizure drew sharp criticism from Moscow, which said US naval forces boarded the vessel in international waters. Russian authorities said contact with the ship ended after the boarding occurred near Iceland.
In addition, Russia demanded that the crew receive humane treatment and be returned safely.
Russia condemns US illegal tanker seizure
Russia’s transport ministry said international law protects freedom of navigation on the high seas. Therefore, it argued that no country may use force against a properly registered foreign vessel.
The ministry cited the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in support of its position. It said the tanker was operating legally under the Russian flag at the time of the seizure.
Meanwhile, Russian officials said the ship had previously changed its name and registration before entering the disputed voyage.
Lawmaker calls action piracy
In addition, a senior Russian lawmaker described the US illegal tanker seizure as piracy under international law. The lawmaker made the statement publicly following the incident.
Russian officials also said US Coast Guard units carried out the operation with military support. However, they said no armed confrontation occurred during the boarding.
Russia has called on Washington to ensure the crew’s safety and arrange their prompt return.
