Viking Expands Cruise Ship Orderbook With New Expedition and Ocean Vessels Through 2034
Luxury cruise operator Viking is extending its long term fleet expansion with new shipbuilding orders that push deliveries into the next decade.
The company confirmed contracts for two additional expedition cruise ships. It also secured options for two ocean cruise vessels that could enter service in 2034.
The expedition ships are scheduled for delivery in 2030 and 2031. If Viking exercises the options, the ocean ships will follow several years later.
Viking Strengthens Long Term Fleet Growth
The latest contracts follow a period of strong demand across Viking’s cruise portfolio.
The company passed the milestone of 100 ships in service during 2025. Its fleet now spans ocean, river, and expedition cruising.
With the new vessels included, Viking currently has 57 ships on order. Deliveries extend through 2034. This gives the company one of the largest forward orderbooks in the cruise industry.
Industry analysts say the growing pipeline reflects the continued recovery of global cruise demand. Interest in premium and destination focused voyages remains strong.
Expedition Cruise Market Drives Strategy
The new vessels will expand Viking’s expedition cruise fleet. The ships are designed for operations in remote regions including the Arctic and Antarctica.
Viking already operates purpose built expedition ships for polar voyages. The additional vessels will increase capacity in this fast growing cruise segment.
Demand for expedition cruises has risen steadily in recent years. Many travelers now seek smaller ships, immersive itineraries, and nature focused experiences.
Cruise operators are investing heavily in this market. Expedition vessels offer higher yields and attract premium passengers.
Fincantieri Continues Long Term Shipbuilding Partnership
Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri will build the new vessels. The company has delivered many of Viking’s ocean cruise ships.
The latest agreement strengthens a long standing partnership between the two companies.
European shipyards remain the global center for cruise ship construction. Viking’s expanding orderbook highlights long term confidence in the luxury cruise market.
With deliveries planned into the next decade, the company continues to invest heavily in future fleet growth.
