ZIM Integrated Shipping Services has joined Israel’s emergency effort to bring citizens home after the conflict disrupted regional air travel. With flights suspended, authorities turned to maritime transport to move stranded travelers back to the country.
As a result, the Israeli container carrier began operating special voyages between Cyprus and Israel using its commercial vessels.
Cyprus Haifa Route Provides Alternative Travel Link
The operation centers on a maritime corridor between Limassol in Cyprus and the Israeli port of Haifa. This route provides a reliable option while airspace restrictions limit passenger flights.
A typical crossing takes about 15 hours. ZIM prepared several container vessels to accommodate passengers during the journey. Government agencies coordinate the operation with port authorities and maritime officials.
Cyprus plays a key role because it sits close to Israel and offers well developed port infrastructure.
Doctors Among First Passengers
Healthcare workers formed the first group transported through the sea corridor. Many Israeli doctors had traveled abroad for conferences and professional meetings before the conflict escalated. When flights stopped, they could not return home.
However, the first voyages successfully brought dozens of doctors back to Israel. Their return allows hospitals to reinforce medical teams treating casualties from missile attacks.
Officials continue to prioritize medical personnel as the operation expands.
Shipping Network Adjusted to Support Repatriation
ZIM adjusted parts of its Mediterranean container schedule to support the repatriation effort. Ships that normally operate cargo routes between Israel and European ports now run the Cyprus Haifa shuttle service.
These vessels can transport additional passengers if authorities request further sailings. Therefore, maritime transport now plays a central role in returning Israelis who remain overseas.
